Features Update 6/30/07

Continuing with yesterday's theme, today brings a bunch of new features that make it easier to sign up.

First up, the author form has been revised to include a "More info" link, which explains our policy on author signups. It's also now possible to enter multiple ISBN numbers when signing up. (If one ISBN is mis-entered but the rest are fine, the form remembers the valid ones.) If there are several things wrong with your signup form, the site now always shows them all at once. Finally, authors don't have to click an activation link in their email before they can start adding events to the site.

Also new today is the fact that a publicist designation actually means something. If you sign up as a publicist (and authors have designated you their contact), you can see a list of all your authors on your Profile page, with links to edit their tour dates. Moreover, if you're a publicist, you can now add authors to the site. Just go to your Profile page and click the link on the bottom. Once you've added the author, just click the edit link to add their tour dates. (All publicists on the site already have been automatically granted this ability.)

A few features have also been re-added after a brief hiatus:
Clicking on a button to sign up as an author now brings you to the author signup form, rather than the generic signup form.
When an author signs up and specifies a publicist address, the link in the publicist's email now points to a page with the publicist's email address already filled in.

Features Update 6/29/07

(TypePad was down last night when I wanted to post this, so here it is.)

Today was the start of a major rewrite of the signup form. New feaures include:
Persistence. In other words, if there's something invalid with your signup form, all the fields (except the ones that were invalid, and the password fields) stay filled in so you don't have to re-enter your information. In addition, the form automatically redirects you to the right type of form, so if you mis-filled out a book group sign-up form, you'll now go back to a book group sign up form.
Specific feedback for what's wrong. Rather than a generic error message, you now get a human-readable listing of all the parts of your signup form that were invalid. In addition, the fields that need correcting get highlighted in red.
Spacing issues have been fixed.
Display incompatibilities with Internet Explorer for Windows have been fixed.
A bug that wouldn't automatically log in upon signing up has been fixed.
A bug that would indicate the form was mis-entered but still create an entry for the author in the database has been fixed.
The publicist email address field can now be left blank. If it is, the author will be assumed to be their own publicist. (Previously, the author had to re-enter their own email address if they wanted this assumption honored.)

Features Update 6/28/07

Today's updates are all behind the scenes. The site now caches author pages, making them load much faster for all but the first person to see them (and the same speed as before for that person). In addition, the site can now handle more simultaneous connections.

Two other things:
A security flaw that could have allowed any user to delete an author's profile has been fixed. Nobody ever used the exploit.
A bug that sometimes prevented authors from editing their pages after changing their names has been fixed.

June 27, 2007

Features Update 6/27/07

New today:
A bug that prevented a few users from logging in has been fixed.
Author biographies now wrap around their headshots.
Spacing issues on the front page have been fixed.
The front page now has a "featured author" section. Check back every day or two to see who's featured.

June 26, 2007

Features Update 6/26/07

Daily update:
A bug that made some events from the Excel spreadsheet incorrectly show up as beginning at midnight has been fixed.
A bug that prevented the editing of some existing events has been fixed.
A bug that essentially prevented the creation of virtual events has been fixed.
A bug that prevented existing virtual events from showing up has been fixed.
Virtual events can now have names. The name becomes the link to the virtual event URL on the author's page.
Events are now sorted by date on the author-editing page.

June 25, 2007

Features Update 6/25/07

Today's updates:
A bug that prevented about half a dozen readers from logging in has been fixed.
The "logged in successfully" message has been eliminated.
Spacing has been fixed on authors' pages.
A bug that prevented authors from adding events if they used Internet Explorer for Windows has been fixed.
A bug that created links to new press releases when an author tried to edit an event has been fixed.
When editing items on an author page, there is no longer a delay in forms appearing. This should make adding new events noticeably snappier for authors.

June 24, 2007

Features Update 6/24/07

Today's news is that a hugely annoying bug that prevented venue pages from displaying has been fixed.

June 23, 2007

Features Update 6/23/07

Two new:
The upload spreadsheet for new events has been updated with new instructions. Your old forms will continue to work.
The caption on the upload-headshot form for authors has been updated to reflect which types of image files work best.

June 22, 2007

Features Update 6/22/07

Today's new feature has been a long time coming (well, a few weeks at least), but it's been our #1 request. So by popular demand:
It is now possible to batch-upload events to BookTour! It doesn't matter whether you're a bookstore, library, club, author, publicist, or publisher. At the bottom of any BookTour page, just click "Add events to BookTour", and follow the directions in the spreadsheet.

June 21, 2007

Features Update 6/21/07

Lots of news today:
If a club or organization provides their homepage address, their BookTour page now links to that address.
If an organization provides their physical address and events are taking place there, those events now show up on the organization's BookTour page. A map is also displayed on the page.
Spacing issues have been fixed on a number of venue-related pages.
A bug that prevented authors from adding new virtual events has been fixed.
When entering URLs into the site, "http://" is automatically prepended. This fixes a bug that prevented some external links on the site from working. The change was applied retroactively.
When logging in, an option to "remember me" is now available (and on by default).

BookTour.com in Action, Take 2: Anne Fadiman

Last night was a lovely night to be a booklover in San Francisco. and a user of BookTour. Earlier this week, I found out (from her BookTour page) that Anne Fadiman, one of my heroes, would be reading at Book Shop West Portal, not too far from my house and proudly respresented on BookTour. The owner of the store is an old friend so I phoned and begged him to let me introduce Ms. Fadiman. To which he graciously said yes.

Ms Fadiman gave a fantastic reading from her new essay collection At Large and At Small. attended by several members of her family who live in the Bay Area, Hut Landon, president of the Northern California Independent Bookellers Association and renowned science writer Ellen Ullman. Me, I felt like the third relief pitcher on the All Star Team.

Ms Fadiman enjoyed my introduction and I even got to give her a signed copy of my book. All because of a gentle tip-off from BookTour.

Hooray!

June 20, 2007

Features Update 6/20/07

New today:
When signing up for the site, groups can provide a physical address. They can also provide a web address and specify what kind of group they are.
A bug that made some groups' willingness to pay invisible on their pages has been fixed.
The spacing on the sign-up page has been fixed.
When adding events, authors now use 12-hour time, rather than 24-hour time. In addition, the menu for adding times has been shrunk from allowing all time intervals to allowing only five-minute intervals (5 minutes after the hour, 10 after the hour, etc.), making it quicker to find the correct time.

June 19, 2007

Features Update 6/19/07

Great meeting a bunch of you at TOC. A few updates:
The spacing on author pages now makes them easier to read.
When you're logged in as an author, an "Edit" link now appears on your page to let you quickly jump to your profile page.
A number of bugs affecting authors' ability to link to media have been fixed.

June 18, 2007

Features Update 6/18/07

A pretty slow day with the preparations for TOC. New useful features:
It's now possible to sign up as a publicist or an organization.
A formatting bug that affected author editing pages has been fixed.
It's now possible to jump from an author editing page to see how the page itself will look when saved.

BookTour at TOC:

Tomorrow (June 19th), all three members of the BookTour.com team (that's Chris, Adam and me, Kevin for those playing at home) will be at the O'Reilly Tools of Change (TOC) conference at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, California. TOC is in its inaugural year and aims to help the publishing industry discover and take advantage of helpful changes in technology products and services. Like ours.

The schedule tomorrow has Chris speaking at 8:30 and 11:50 AM and Adam demoing BookTour during the "lighting demos" which begin at 7:30 PM. We'll be on hand the rest of the day to talk about BookTour, meet with and answer questions of anyone who like to know more about us and our service.

See ya in San Jose.

BookTour at BEA Podcast: Hear it all!

Chris announces BookTour at Book Expo America in New York City earlier this month.

June 17, 2007

Features Update 6/17/07

New today:
The speed and accuracy of the book-searching algorithm has been improved
The search-results page interface has been improved.
Venue pages are now more evenly spaced.

June 16, 2007

BookTour.com on Writers Revealed Radio...

Kevin here. I'm going to be on the Writers Revealed radio show tomorrow to discuss building online buzz for a book.

The show will air live tomorrow (Sunday, June 17th) at 7 PM EST and can be heard here.

Features Update 6/16/07

News today:
The author headshot-uploading feature is fully functional. You can upload a headshot and it will automatically be resized to fit on the website.
The interface for uploading headshots has been improved.

Features Update 6/15/07

Today was an author-centric day. Here's what's new:
More authors and events are now listed on the site.
A bug that prevented Firefox from using certain authors' RSS feeds has been fixed.
Virtual events now appear in both author RSS feeds and author widgets.
It is now possible for authors to upload headshots. Note that this feature is currently in testing; if you upload your headshot today or this weekend, check back in a few days to make sure it's still there.

June 14, 2007

Features Update 6/14/07

Today involved rewriting the author event-management system. The most immediate features to come from this are:
Authors can now edit events they've already created.
It is now possible to add "virtual events." If you're going to be interviewed on a podcast, for example, you can now specify the URL that people can visit to tune in.

Although these features have gone through a lot of testing, there may still be some rough edges. Use the feedback form to let me know if you encounter any weird behaviour.

June 13, 2007

Features Update 6/13/07

New today:

More authors and tour dates have been added to the site.
Requesting an author now sends an email to both the author and his or her publicist.
For authors, the Profile link now points to the same page as the "Announce your tour dates" button. In other words, there are no longer two separate pages for authors to enter their information.

BookTour.com in Action...

So I've been playing around with BookTour.com since the day we went into public beta but hadn't yet found tha sweet spot of an author I loved coming soon to a venue near me.

Last night it happened. On a casual shuffle through our database, I spotted that Amanda Eyre Ward, author of the new novel "Forgive Me" was going to be appearing at several spots in the San Francisco Bay Area next week.

Amanda is both one of my favorite authors and one my favorite people. She and her family live across the country and we only get to see each other at book festivals or when one of us is on tour.

Minus Amanda listing her tour dates on BookTour, I would have missed her.

It works! It works!

June 12, 2007

Features Update 6/12/07

Today's new features:
If you're an author, you can now add more than one of each type of media to you profile. For instance, you can add links to more than one interview. If you do this, readers can see a list of each type of media when they click the appropriate button on your author page.
The Library on the front page has been revised. There are now broader categories than before.
The Library page has been completely rewritten. You can now see sub-categories with a single click, and see a list of authors on the side of the page.

June 11, 2007

Features Update 6/11/07

One major new feature today: authors can now add links to various media (web pages, audio, video, and more) to their author pages. If you're an author, just visit your edit page and start adding links; they'll automatically appear on your author page.

June 10, 2007

Features Update 6/10/07

With all the excitement at Book Group Expo, there was only time today to make two tweaks:
A bug that prevented some authors from editing their pages has been fixed. The bug affected authors whose books' cover images were not available online.
The appearance of buttons on the front page has changed.

June 09, 2007

Features Update 6/9/07

It was great to see a bunch of you at Book Group Expo today. Here's what's new:

Search page results no longer display weirdly.
The email sent to new authors no longer has a typo in it.
The front page is now spaced better.
The Library on the front page now has a More link. Click it to see the list of all topics you can browse.

June 08, 2007

Features Update 6/8/07

Today's news:

A bug that prevented some searches from running has been fixed.
The front page has a tweaked appearance that makes it easier on the eyes.
In widgets and author pages, events are now automatically listed in chronological order.
A bug that prevented authors from adding events in some parts of Los Angeles has been fixed.
Search pages now have a smoother appearance.
All the sign-up forms on the site (for authors, readers, and book-club leaders) have been integrated into a single page.

Book Group Expo: This weekend in San Jose

If you're in downtown San Jose this weekend, stop by the San Jose Convention Center for Book Group Expo, a giganormous event devoted to forming community around things readerly and writerly. BookTour will have a booth in the marketplace stocked with chocolates so please visit us for something sweet and a demo of the site. Kevin (that's me) will be staffing things on Saturday, Adam on Sunday.

If you're shy, wave. If we wave back, it's safe to approach.

June 07, 2007

Features Update 6/7/07

Today was mostly devoted to fixing annoyances:

Several major bugs that prevented many authors' widgets from working has been fixed.
The link to create a widget is now context-sensitive. That is, it lets you know whether the widget is for your dates or for some author author's dates.
In response to several requests, it's now possible to create a narrower version of the author widget, for use on sites in which space is tight. At the end of the "author_widget" url, just tack on "?squeeze=true" (without the quotes).
The link at the bottom of author widgets now points back to the specific author's page, rather than to the homepage of BookTour.com.
A bug that made useless scrollbars appear on author pages in some versions of Firefox has been fixed.
A bug that made book clubs' descriptions invisible to interested authors has been fixed.
Authors can now contact book groups to express interest in speaking engagements.

The Missing Third:

Hi everyone! I'm Kevin Smokler, the heretofore silent third founder of BookTour. I'm the company's Chief Evangelist and Community Director which really means it's my job to

1) Speak on behalf of BookTour in public, particularly when neither Chris nor Adam are available.

2) Act as the facilitator between the publishing industry, authors, readers and the company.

3) Show readers, agents, publishers, authors and booksellers how BookTour can made their jobs easier.

and

4) Make the BookTour experience smooth and useful for you.

To that end, I'll be making occasional updates here on how our service can best work for you and new and exciting ways to use it.

In my pre-here life, I write a lot, speak and blog some, think too much and shut up too little.

The three of us pride ourselves on running a small, nimble company that can respond quickly to our community's feedback. So should you not understand anything happening here or want to be able to do something with BookTour that right now you can't, please let us know. I can be found at Kevin@booktour.com.

As my grandmother used to say "There are no stupid questions. We're all just dumber when nobody asks them." So ask away. That's what we're here for.

June 06, 2007

Features Update 6/6/07

New today:

There is no longer a typo on the Welcome page.
The site's favicon (the little icon in your browser's address bar) now displays properly in Firefox.
The beginnings of a feature to let you choose what store to purchase a book from have been added. Use the one of the "More stores" links on an author's page.
If for some reason BookTour rejects your application to sign up, you now arrive back at the signup form, rather than at a generic error page.
A bug that prevented some authors' pages from displaying properly has been fixed.

And finally, a much-requested feature:

You can now embed authors' tour dates on your own website! Just navigate to the author's page and click "Add this author's tour dates to your web page." The directions appear right in your browser window.

June 05, 2007

Features Update 6/5/07

Another busy day. Here's what's new:

A major bug that kept most authors from being able to add more books to their profile has been fixed.
A bug that kept some users from being able to access the Comments form has been fixed.
A bug that prevented authors from including books with the letter "X" in their ISBNs has been fixed.
The front-page Library has now been expanded with more categories. Each time you load the front page, you'll get a different selection of categories. Click one to see all the authors on the site who've written books in that category.
There are some aesthetic improvements to the Profile page. When logged in, click the Profile link in the upper-right corner of the window to get to your Profile page.
When signing up, you can now designate yourself the representative of a book club or speaker series. If you sign up on behalf a group, you get to specify additional facts about your group, such as whether it compensates authors for speaking.
If you're an author, you can search for book clubs in places you're going. On the author editing page, type in the zip code of a place you're going, and click Go. You'll arrive at a page of book clubs in that area that have signed up on BookTour.
The request-an-author button now links to a form where you can submit additional comments to the author you're contacting. When the author receives the request email, he or she will also have the opportunity to reply to you directly by email.

June 04, 2007

Features Update 6/4/07

Hey everyone—this is Adam, the programmer/CTO.

Today was a busy day for bug fixes. Here's what's new:

If you're a reader who isn't logged in, you can now send feedback through the feedback form. In other words, if you can't sign up for some reason, now you can let me know.
The site doesn't call out to Google Maps every time a page loads. This makes pages load noticeably faster.
The "More" buttons on the front page now work again.
There are many new events and authors.
If you're an author, you can now add multiple books to your profile. Simply log into your account, click the button for authors, and click the Add Book button on your profile page.
Venue pages now have a link to get directions from Google Maps.
If you try to go to a page that doesn't exist, the error page is now much friendlier.

Many of these improvements were driven by your suggestions, so keep them coming!

Welcome

Hi, and welcome to the BookTour blog! This is where we'll be talking about all things around book tours, including both our company and the community of authors and audiences that it's designed to serve.

booktourbanner

On May 31st at BookExpo America we announced that the site is now accepting beta testers. We also discussed the overall concept that inspired us to start the company in the first place, which I'll tell you more about in a sec.

But first, introductions. We're Chris Anderson (I'm the one writing this), Adam Goldstein and Kevin Smokler. All three of us are authors, so we understand the needs of people who write and want to find audiences and otherwise promote their work. Adam is the technologist (he wrote AppleScript: The Missing Manual, and co-wrote Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual with David Pogue). Kevin, who wrote Bookmark Now: Writing in Unreaderly Times, is the evangelist/community outreach director. And I, who wrote The Long Tail and edit Wired Magazine by day, am the guy who writes the checks, steers the boat and otherwise watches Adam and Kevin do all the real work.

The inspiration for the company is simple. Every year thousands of authors go on book tour, mostly to bookstores around the country. Although it's great to make that connection with local booksellers, the number of people who show up for such appearances isn't always huge and then authors often find themselves with time on their hands in a town where they don't necessarily know other groups to approach. Meanwhile, at any given moment there is a virtually boundless number of potential audiences, ranging from community groups, companies, professional groups, universities and even book groups that are constantly looking for speakers. If only they'd known that this great author was in town, they would have loved to invite her/him to speak!

So there you have it: a supply of authors traveling the country on their publisher's (or their own) dime, looking for audiences to reach to help market their book, and a demand for such authors. Only the two don't meet, because there's no single place to find out who's coming to town and who in each town is looking for authors.

Enter BookTour. We do three things. First, we aggregate all the available information on the web about existing book tours, mostly from publisher and bookseller sites. Second, we give authors and publicists a place to enter their own book tour details and availability in a way that anyone can find. And finally, we give potential audiences a way to contact authors and publicists and request an event, either in a town the author is already visiting, or to suggest a new town to add to the tour.

The advantages are pretty clear for everyone involved:

  • For Authors: We help you reach more audiences, better audiences and otherwise help you market your book through personal contact and appearances, which can be the most effective of all.
  • For Publicists: We help you identify new audiences in each town who might like to hear from your author. If you like, you can be the main point of contact, rather than the author. It's your choice.
  • For Booksellers: We'll soon have a link so that audiences planning an event can contact a local bookstore to sell books at the event.
  • For Audiences: We're essentially a free speakers bureau. It's a one-stop shopping place to find talented experts and fascinating writers who would be delighted to speak to your group. You can contact them and negotiate the event directly with the author or publicist. We just make the introduction, and then let you work out the details on your own terms.

Of course there are a few rough edges and we're adding features and data every day, but we hope you're as enthusiastic about the potential of this site as we are. Sign up, enjoy, and please give me your feedback at chris@booktour.com. We're here to make your job easier.
