Audiobooks are available for cheap these days, I get mine shipped from Simply Audiobooks on a monthly rental plan and find it pretty comfortable. This way, I don't need to go get a paperback for meself, or worry about not finishing the book before my time is up - I just burn it to my iPod! :)

I'd be interested to know if there is any research to show preferences for audiobooks to print and if one has more information retention and comprehension when a book is heard than read.

Being a self-published author, and recently having put my book on Google Book Search, I realise that making the book free for viewing doesn't seem to change book sales in the least. In fact, it does encourage it. People do still want a book to curl up to – and I suspect that's how it is always going to be. E-books, for anyone I know, are just not as enjoyable. And most people still enjoy printed books than audio books, as well, which means I would probably support free audio downloads of my book too (something I am considering.)
There is something about the printed form that even I, as a usual non-traditionalist, have to admit probably won't pass away- even with the digital age. I might be wrong, but so far it seems that I'm right.

If you like audio books you should check out YAKiToMe! (http://www.yakitome.com), a free website that turns any electronic text into an audio book that you can podcast, share and download for free. I use it to listen to technical journals, email, RSS feeds, novels, ... you name it. The podcasting features are excellent. It also has pronunciation controls so I can tweak the output any way I want. I think the site is awesome.

I forgot to mention that YAKiToMe! also has a large library of free audio books ready to download. Oh, one more thing, YAK speaks in multiple languages, too.

Hi. I agree in principal with your ideas at the same time I do believe if someone invents something before others.
