Chris Thilk writes in with news from the former blockbuster industry:
"I remember in The Long Tail you talk about a movie (I don't remember which one) [ed: it was The Dark Hours] that set the lowest box office record, so I thought you'd be interested in this:
"Jessica Simpson may also have set a record at the box office. Her latest film, Blonde Ambition, co-starring Luke Wilson, took in just $1,190 over the weekend. True, it was shown in only eight Texas theaters, but that's still an average of less than $50 per theater per day, meaning about six people showed up to see it in each location each day. On his TV Guide Online blog, film critic Ken Fox asked, "Doesn't someone like Jessica Simpson have more than 48 friends? What about that big Texas family of hers? ... Just how bad is this thing anyway?"
BTW, total US box office grosses this year will be about $9.4 billion, up 4.5% on last year, but still below 2003 and 2004 in inflation adjusted dollars. Total tickets sold will also trail 2003 and 2004 by 4.5% and 3.5% respectively.

Recently I've been watching avidly a Japanese movie series"tora-san"(aka it's tough being a man) which was mega hits in Japan when they were released over a lengthy period of 28 years.Hence the longest-running film series in history(Guiness tested).
The last installment opened almost a decade ago when the central actor died. so what's left of its popularity should have waned in Japan, much less in other parts of the world. But thanks to the LONG TAIL, they are regaining traction again.Turns out that chinese people are exceptionally crazy about this Japanese show when they are just a click away. In the past the not-so-easy access(fixed time slots on TV etc) just buried their interests alive. Now that the shows are so very readily available on the internet their tremendous interest in the series are remarkably distinguished.I'm one of them.I NEVER thought I'd watch a dubbed japanese movie, but now I'm enjoying it greatly.Great shows indeed...

This was one of the movies that were made post-Katrina in Shreveport, LA. Since my boss watched Mr. Brooks (a movie about a serial killer) on mute just to see the locations that she knew, I'm guessing some Shreveporters will be watching Blonde Ambition just for the scenery too!

This is a truly awful movie, but wonderful at the same time. It's like Tokyo Drift ... although not quite as stupid as that masterpiece. Blonde Ambition is not a mean, ugly film like Showgirls, which they have tried to rebrand as a cult classic. Rather, it is a piece of bubblegum ... and a monument of sugary stupidity rarely achieved in cinema ... therefore bubblegum you can savor long after the flavor is gone. Watching Jessica Simpson mug like an idiot, trying to do slapstick, possibly the worst I've ever seen, is a joy beyond words. Andy Dick is a dick. I guess Luke Wilson has some talent, but this script is so bad it's kind of fun to watch the what-the-****-am-i-doing-in-this-t*rd looks fall across his face as he tries to deliver the awful lines. Highly recommended.
